A biennial is the flagship format of the contemporary art world. Venice, São Paulo, Whitney, Berlin, Sharjah, Istanbul, Documenta’s neighbours. Dozens of cities run one, they take years to organise, and they move enormous amounts of money and attention.
There’s no central place covering them. A listings and calendar site, a criticism platform, a database of past editions and participating artists, or a travel resource for people who plan their year around these events would all be useful and all fit this name exactly.
The word also has a plain meaning outside art: anything happening every two years, including trade shows, conferences, and reports. That broadens the buyer pool without weakening the primary reading.
