The networking reading is the most natural given the extension. Anything connecting one layer to another, which describes most of what infrastructure software actually does, fits comfortably. So does a data pipeline product, a transformation service, or a gateway.
The more durable point is about length rather than meaning. A three-character domain solves a set of problems permanently: it never gets misheard, it fits any layout, it doesn’t get abbreviated by customers into something the company didn’t choose, and it makes an email address that people type correctly the first time. Those sound minor individually. Across a decade of operating a business they aren’t.
