The open social web is the actual name of a real movement. ActivityPub, Mastodon, Bluesky and the AT Protocol, Threads federating, the W3C standards work behind all of it. The phrase is what the people building this stuff call the thing they’re building.
That’s the whole case. This isn’t a speculative concept name, it’s the established term for an architecture that major platforms have now committed to. A name that sits on the term itself is the natural home for a standards body, a developer resource, a server directory, an advocacy project, a news site covering federation, or a company selling hosting and tooling into it.
The field is early enough that the canonical address for the category is still unclaimed, and that window doesn’t stay open. Once a movement matures, the definitional domains get expensive or disappear into someone’s portfolio permanently.
Three plain words, no abbreviation, and it says exactly what it is to the only audience that matters here.
